Cpl. Richard L. Strathman, Colby, was one of 80 enlisted men of the Wisconsin
Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserved in Wisconsin who received awards at
the eighth annual Milwaukee Journal military awards program. The ceremony took
place at 3 p.m. Sunday at WTMJ-TV.
Lt. General George V. Underwood Jr., commanding General of the Fifth U.S. Army,
gave the main address and presented gold medallions to the awardees. He was
assisted by master of ceremonies Richard C. Leonard, vic president and editor of
the Milwaukee Journal.
The awards are won by meeting high standards set jointly by the 5th Army and the
adjutant general of Wisconsin. The award winners were nominated by their unit
commanders and screened by a board of officers.
Nominees had to meet establish prerequisites, which include assignment to an
active Wisconsin Army National Guard or Army Reserve unit in the past year,
qualification in his military job, attendance at scheduled drills and annual
training, military appearance, and leadership and citizenship qualities.
