Mr. and Mrs. David J. Calley Jr., Route 1, Colby, have been selected as the 1971
outstanding young dairy couple of the Marathon-Clark District of Associated Milk
Producers, Incorporated. This was announced by Arnold Bakke of rural Curtiss,
the district’s representative on the AMPI Mid-State Region Board of Directors.
Couples are selected on the basis of leadership, personality and progress in
dairy farming.
The Mid-State Region of the AMPI has 32 districts in the process of selecting a
couple to compete for the title of outstanding young diary couple in the region
in Chicago, August 19-20.
Five finalist couple will be named. From the five, a winning couple will be
chosen and will represent AMPI as national young cooperator delegates at the
annual convention of the National Milk Producers Federation in Bal Harbor,
Florida, November 28 to December 2. A runner-up couple will be selected and will
also attend the NMPF convention as delegates. The three remaining finalist
couples will represent AMPI at the 1972 annual convention of the American
Institute of Cooperation.
The outstanding young diary couples program is designed to encourage leadership
among young members of AMPI.
Calley, 34, operates a 205 acre dairy farm. He milks 32 cows of a herd of 62
Holsteins and milk is delivered to the AMPI plant at Madison.
A native of Kirksville, Missouri, he received his high school education in
Mendota, Illinois, and Bradley, South Dakota, graduating from Bradley High
School in 1956. He also attended the South Dakota University in Brookings one
year.
Besides being a member of AMPI, Calley belong to the Tri-State Breeders
Cooperative, from which he received a herd recognition award last year.
His wife, Janice, also graduated from Bradley, South Dakota High School and
attended South Dakota State University. She, too, is a leader of the Colby
Clovers 4-H Club. She has been a member of the Sand Hill Extension Homemakers
Club for eight years, and has served as president, vice-president, and treasurer
of the group.
The Calleys are parents of five children: Gilbert, 14; Terra, 12; Thomas, 9;
Brian, 7; and Kristine, 6 months old.
