Kotcon, Michael (3 February 1952 – 16 May 1976)
Funeral services were being held this week in Greenwood for three area residents
who were injured fatally in a collision between two cars on Highway 13, just
north of Marshfield, about 7 p.m. Sunday.
Still in critical condition with head injuries Tuesday morning was Mrs. Betty
Roberts, 42, wife of Roberts and mother of Kotcon. She also suffered head
injuries in the crash which saw the car driven by Mrs. Bolf broken into three
sections by the impact.
Double services were to be held today (Thursday) at 10:30 a.m. from the Rinka
Funeral Home for Gordon Roberts, 56, of Greenwood, and his step-son, Michael A.
Kotcon, 24, of Willard. Kotcon died in the Marshfield hospital about 10:30 p.m.
Sunday, two and one-half hours after the accident.
Marathon County authorities reported that the car driven by Mrs. Bolf went out
of control on the rain-slicked highway and skidded cross-wise of the pavement in
front of the Roberts car. They attributed the accident to the slick condition of
the highway surface and high speed. A motorist saw the Bolf car shortly before
the accident, the officers reported, and estimated the speed of the car at from
80 to 90 miles per hour.
Roberts who was instantly killed, was pinned inside his car until firemen from
Marshfield were able to cut his door open.
Roberts, his wife and step-son had left a Marshfield supper club but moments
before the accident. They had dined there with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thompson and
Mr. and Mrs. Arden Hinkelmann, of Neillsville, after attending an art showing of
Mrs. Thompson’s works in Marshfield.
They were traveling to Greenwood to attend a baccalaureate service for Greenwood
High School graduates that evening. Among the graduates is Lynn Ann Kotcon, a
daughter of Mrs. Roberts.
Roberts and Kotcon both worked in Neillsville, the former as a tool and die
maker for M&E Development Center, a division of Nelson Industries, Inc., and the
latter a meat cutter at Mallegni’s United Food Store.
At the joint services, this morning at the Rinka Funeral Home, the Rev. David
Wenger of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, will conduct rites for Roberts. The Rev.
Michael Mertens, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church of Willard, will be in
charge of the rites for Kotcon. Burial for Roberts will be made in the Loyal
Cemetery; for Kotcon in the Holy Family Cemetery at Willard.
Kotcon was born in Marshfield February 3, 1952. He received his formal education
in the Greenwood schools, graduating from high school there in 1970.
A Memorial Mass for him was to be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family
Catholic Church in Willard.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Roberts; two sisters, Roberta and Lynn Kotcon
of Greenwood; and by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Luzovec of
Willard.
