Covell, Allen C. (7 May 1906 – 28 May 1976)
A retired civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force who formerly served as the
first administrator of the Clark County Forestry Department, Allen C. Covell,
70, died Friday, May 28, at his home in Neillsville. Services were scheduled for
Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. from the United Church of Christ with the Rev. Gary Clark
officiating. Burial was to be made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The
Georgas-Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Born May 7, 1906, at Knapp to W.H. and Mary Claire Covell, he was educated at
schools at Knapp and Hudson before attending engineering school at the
University of Minnesota. Mr. Covell was employed by the State of Florida and
State of Wisconsin highway departments before becoming the first Clark County
Forestry Department Administrator. For several years, he worked for the Badger
State Telephone Company.
His marriage to the former Marie Woelffer took place January 1, 1932, in
Neillsville.
In 1956, the Covells moved to Fargo, N.D., where he was employed as a
communica4tion engineer for five years. From 1961 until his retirement in 1975,
Mr. Covell was a civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force, working in Oklahoma,
Pennsylvania, Athens, Greece, and Wiesbaden Germany, and for five years, at
Griffiss AFB in New York State. The Covells returned to Neillsville in September
of 1975.
Mr. Covell was a member of the United Church of Christ and of Neillsville Lodge
No. 163 F&AM.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two children, Mrs. Robert
(Charlotte) Drescher of Neillsville and GMC Wm. V. Covell, with the U.S. Navy in
Sicily; one sister, Mrs. Gwendolyn Bunce of St. Paul, Mn.; two brothers, Arnold
Covell of DeFuniak Springs, Fl,; and Donald Covell of Tallahassee, Fl; and four
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 2, from the United Church of Christ for a
retired civilian U.S. Air Force employee, Allen C. Covell, 70, who succumbed to
heart failure May 28 at his home in Neillsville. Mr. Covell, who was the first
administrator of the Clark County Forestry Department, had served as worshipful
master of Neillsville Lodge No. 163, F&AM, and as high priest of Royal Arch
Masons. He had served as well as president of the Rotary Club, and for a time
was a local Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.
The Rev. Gary Clark officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services, which were followed by
interment in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the
Georgas-Gesche Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Herb Smith, Fred Daft, Carl Gerald, Joe Ylvisaker, Don
Schwantes and Fred Wall. Serving as honorary pallbearers were W.H. Allen, Walter
Brown, Clarence Perry, Arthur Epding, Earle Siebert and Robert Schiller.
“A Mighty Fortress is Our God” was sung by the congregation. Deon Spangler was
the organist.
Relatives from out of town attending the services were A.B. Covell, DeFuniak
Springs, Fl.; D.R. Covell, Tallahassee, Fl.; Mrs. F.W. Bunce, Brookings, S.D.;
and Mrs. Lyle Burchell, Fargo, N.D.
Others from away included Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Epding, Wausau; Clarence Perry,
Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ylvisaker, Stoughton; Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Enerson,
Madison; Mrs. Art Ziegler, Clintonville; Mrs. Ed Levina, Shawano; Mrs. Clint
Burghardt, Merrillan; Mrs. Virgil Lezotte, Merrill; Mr. and Mrs. Laird Ross,
Alma; and Mrs. Lillian Warner, Greenwood.
