A fire which broke out Wednesday, September 1, 1965 in the silo on the Robert
Rueden far, three miles north and three miles east of Abbotsford, was finally
extinguished at about 3 a.m. Friday morning.
Mr. Rueden discovered the fire in the silo, which had about 30 feet of grass
silage in his 20-foot diameter silo, while milking Wednesday morning. Flames
were visible beneath a wood door in the silo, which at the bottom edge, did not
fit tight to the silo.
He called the Abbotsford fire department, which stayed on the scene until early
Friday morning. The fire seemed to burn through parts of the silage, tunneling
its way, and leaving other areas untouched.
The silo was unloaded and the grass silage was piled outside the barn, where any
burning parts were extinguished.
There was no damage reported to the silo, but in the unloading process, good
feed remaining became mixed with the charred and smoked silage.
