Legion to Honor Mashin (2020)

Legion to Honor Mashin

Donald Mashin will be recognized by the Neillsville Legion as it continues its monthly celebration of veterans in July.

Mashin joined the National Guard 32nd Red Arrow Infantry in 1959 at Neillsville. His Army basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood In Missouri, and he had advanced training at Fort Ord In California.

In 1961, Mashin was activated to Fort Lewis in Washington during the Berlin Crisis. His assignment was driving officers around the base.

After leaving Fort Lewis, Mashin returned to Neillsville and continued training with the National Guard until being discharged in October 1966.

Mashin was born in the Town of Hewett where he attended grade school. He eventually attended Neillsville High School.

Mashin worked various jobs after discharge, including with Kurt Marg, Marshfield Homes, a research farm and Tesmer Construction where he helped construct the WCCN radio station.

He also worked for Nefco for 17 year before working at Nelson Muffler, where he worked for 15 years.

Mashin retired because of health problems but played with a band on weekends.

Mashin married Carol Weisner. They have two children, Rollin and Tara, and two granddaughters.

Mashin enjoys playing guitar, bowling, softball, darts, hunting, fishing and playing cards.

Although Mashin will be honored throughout July with fellow veterans Leo Weisner and Wendell Ziegler, there will be no potluck as usual. The potlucks have been suspended until further notice.
