Weisner to be Honored by Legion (2020)
Leo Weisner, a veteran of the National Guard, will be one of three honored by
American Legion Post 73 throughout July. Submitted Photo
As the American Legion Post 73 resumes its tradition of honoring veterans, Leo
Weisner will be one of the three honored in July.
Weisner joined the Neillsville National Guard 32nd Division, 128th Infantry
Company. While in the National Guard, he worked for his dad and later with
Herman and Bert Schultz as a logger. In 1961, the Neillsville National Guard was
called to active duty to go to Fort Lewis in Washington for training during the
Berlin Crisis. Weisner was a sergeant and went to California for three days of
extra training.
Weisner was a leader of a 12-man team. Training was in the desert and the
mountains of Washington.
The 32nd Division was sent back to Neillsville in August 1962 and was discharged
in October of that year. Upon returning, he worked at Nelson Muffler and later
owned his own trucking business. He also worked part time for the Neillsville
Police Department.
Later, Weisner worked full time for the Police Department and the Clark County
Sheriff’s Department. He retired in 2019 after 39 years in law enforcement.
Weisner, who was born in Neillsville, graduated from Wildwood Grade School and
attended Neillsville High School. He later received his GED.
Weisner married Florence Wetzel in 1959. They have five children, including
Tammy, Carol, Annette, John and Donald. They also have seven grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
Weisner has lived in Neillsville all his life. He enjoys fishing and hunting and
keeps busy repairing lawnmowers and small engines.
Although Wiesner will be honored throughout July with fellow veterans Donald
Mashin and Wedell Ziegler, there will be no potluck as usual. The potlucks have
been suspended until further notice.
