Christie, David and Robert

THORP -- Two former Thorp residents will be invited to the White House September 11 to receive a medal for bravery from President Ronald Reagan, it was learned Wednesday.

David and Robert Christie, then of Thorp, were told four years ago that they had won the Young American Medal for Bravery for pulling nine people from a blazing van wreck in 1975. The two brothers were told that then President Jimmy Carter would present the medal at a White House ceremony, but they and seven other winners chosen since 1975 never got the medal.

Several months ago, the U.S. justice Department asked Reagan to take the time to honor the nine.

David Christie Jr., 21, now lives in Cornell. Robert, 20, lives in Fall Creek.
