Mohr, Mark (My Grandma - 2000)

This story is about my Grandma’s life. My Grandma Mohr was born in 1920 four miles south of Neillsville on a little farm. She was born at home and there wasn’t a doctor there.

My Grandma’s house didn’t have electricity and no running water. She didn’t have electricity until she was 28 years old. That means that there was no television, no telephone, no computer, and no refrigerator. Grandma got her first radio when she was 19. Of course, it was battery operated because there was no electricity. At age 32, Grandma got running water in the house. At age 46, she got her first water heater. Her first indoor bathroom was put in when she was 57. Before that time, the only bathroom was an outdoor toilet.

The first 11 years that Grandma was married, they did everything with horses. In 1950, Grandpa got his first tractor. In 1945, Grandma and Grandpa bought their first car.

In 1941, Grandpa bought 120 acres for 125 dollars. Today that same land would sell for ten times that amount for each acre. That means the price of land has gone up by a factor of 1200 times. At the that time, farmers got $2.20 for one hundred pounds of milk. Today the price of milk is only $10 for one-hundred pounds. That means that the price of land has gone up 240 times more than the price of milk.

Grandma’s first four children were born at home. In 1946 she went to the hospital to have her fifth child. She was in the hospital for ten days and the bill was 48 dollars.

As you can see things have really changed during my grandma’s 80 years. That is the story about my loving and caring Grandma.
