July 4 means many things to many people - to some, it means time with family and
friends; to others it means a long weekend and to yet others it’s a celebration
to remember those who served in the military. To the Redcloud family of Jackson
County, it means remembering one of their own who served during the Korean War,
Cpl. Mitchell Redcloud Jr.
The Andrew Blackhawk Memorial Park in Black River Falls was the site of the
Mitchell Redcloud Jr. flag-raising Monday, July 4, during Mitchell Redcloud Jr.
Day.
The Mitchell Redcloud Jr. Marine detachment 1363 presented colors. Following a
flag-raising, Craig Cleveland, 13, read Redcloud’s biography and discussed
Redcloud’s heroic actions Nov. 5, 1950, near Choghyon, Korea, for which Redcloud
was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Mitchel Redcloud’s family keeps his memory alive every year with this Pow-Wow,
which is open to the public. Redcloud family members open the event to all who
wish to attend and provide a lunch and do not request to be reimbursed – the
event is just a day to remember and reflect.
This year, over 200 attended. Drummers present included the Winnebago Sons, Iron
Mound, Thundercloud, Little Thunder and five others.
Opening prayers were read in the Ho-Chunk language; Chief Clayton Winneshiek led
the Grand Entry at the Pow-Wow ground at 1:30 p.m., with the entry open to all
who wished to dance.
