Mayenschein, David (Army Veteran - 2011)
Junior Auxiliary member Zabrina Mason interviewed veteran David Mayenschein. He
was in the U.S. Army Unit 101 Airborne. He was drafted in 1966 and ended his
tour of duty in September of 1968. He did served during hostile times, as he was
in Vietnam. David attended boot camp at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. His rank was
Specialist E4. His job was a grenadier on the front line.
David still does communicate with one comrade of his unit. He did see intense
fighting as he was in Vietnam for 60 days before being wounded. He was wounded
twice within five days. He was scared many times, as his unit was picked up in a
helicopter to where the enemy was.
His combat story is that his unit was pinned down by the enemy and was bombed
and only five men from his unit survived. There were 186 men in his unit.
David said there was no fun or enjoyment as a soldier. He does belong to the
Legion and the VFW. He is not active at this time but hopes to be in the future.
