The following students from Clark County were among 722 students receiving degrees from the UW-River Falls following commencement in May. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 645 undergraduates, while 77nstudents received graduate degrees.

Embke, Delbert H. (9 October 1945 – 26 June 2023)

Delbert H. Embke, 77, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, at home with his wife by his side.

He was born on October 9, 1945, in Black River Falls, and raised in Neillsville, the youngest of four boys born to Herman and Nina (Gates) Embke.

Delbert could fix anything. If he didn’t have the tool, he invented it, which always worked. He could drive anything, dump truck, cement truck, semi-truck, log truck and anything in the gravel pit. At age 73 he overhauled a 1962 Allis Chalmers tractor. Most of all Delbert liked to talk to people, even if he didn’t know them. He liked to make people laugh and smile and was a big joker, also. Delbert also enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and dancing to old time music.

He is survived by his wife Judy of 58 years, children Catherine Morgan, Roger Embke and Cheryl (Dave) Rozmenoski, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother Ron Embke, sister-in-law Anita Embke along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents, two brothers Darrell Embke and Eugene Embke, one half-brother Ernest Embke along with his father and mother-in-law Bernard and Charlene Hansen.

.Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Schumacher – Kish Funeral & Cremation Services, 200 West Ave. S, La Crosse. Deacon Bob Zietlow will officiate. Burial will follow in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park in La Crosse. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 A.M. until the time of service.

Poppe, Norman John (25 February 1932 – 3 July 2023) With Flag

Norman John Poppe was born February 25, 1932, to John and Elsie Poppe (nee Hemp). He was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe, Wisconsin. Norman attended the Worchel School in the Town of Seif. After being honorably discharged from the US Army in 1955, he married Ardith Florence Suckow in May of 1959. Together, they farmed until they retired in 1993. After retiring and moving to a house south of Christie, Norman worked for the city of Neillsville for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 73.

Norman is survived by his wife, Ardith, and children: Dennis (Cheryl) Poppe of Eau Claire, Jerry (Marie) Poppe of Brookfield, Kathy (Ron) Talford of Menomonie, and Sherri (Pete) Tlusty of Kronenwetter, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ethel Kroll.

A Memorial Service for Norman will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe, WI. Pastor Nathan Wilke will officiate. Music will be provided by Karen Hoppa organist. Interment will be in the Immanuel Church Cemetery, with military honors performed by the Neillsville Veteran's Council. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Monday at the church.

Scheffer, Susan Jane (6 October 1950 – 24 June 2023)

Susan Jane Scheffer, born October 6, 1950, passed away Saturday June 24, 2023.

Sue was the second of eight children born to Bernard and Anne Scheffer, and grew up on the Scheffer farm in rural Humbird. Sue attended Fairchild School and Saint Bedes high school, graduating in 1968.

Sue gave birth to her daughters Tina and Lisa in 1975 and 1976. Sue was so proud of her daughters and did a wonderful job raising them as a single parent, while putting herself through nursing school and graduating with an LPN license. Sue worked many years as a nurse for a home healthcare company, Sacred Heart Hospital, and Marshfield Clinic.

Sue was naturally witty, caring, compassionate and empathetic towards her patients, friends, and family. She was a very proud grandma to her three grandsons. Sue loved talking about them and watching them grow.

Sue is survived by her daughters Tina Deeney (Evan, Cayden, and Rylan) and Lisa Scheffer. She is further survived by siblings Mary (Mike) Louie, Grays Lake, IL; Maggie Scheffer-Tiller, Iron Rover, MI; Doug (Joan) Scheffer, Humbird; Jim (Patty Cuddy) New Auburn; Barb (Dennis) Hardwick, Alma Center; Carla (Dan) Sieg, Eau Claire; and Michaela (Dave) Theiler, Humbird. She was also a wonderful Aunt to sixteen nieces and nephews, and a genuine friend to many.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Anne Scheffer, and her nephew Ben Sieg.

A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends. A Celebration of Life is being planned for September.

Joseph J. "Bucky" Tomczak, Jr., 73, of Lublin, passed away at home on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

Joseph Julian Tomczak, Jr. was born on August 7, 1949, in Stanley, to Joseph J. and Adeline M. (Fortin) Tomczak, Sr. He was raised and received his education in the Taylor/Clark County area. After completing school, he held various jobs, including farming, worked for Earl's Rides for several years, worked with his father in forestry, and for Marathon Cheese in Medford. After retiring, Joe enjoyed fixing lawnmowers, working on cars, tinkering on anything, and built a sawmill and wood splitter. In his spare time, he loved fishing, hunting, trapping, word find puzzles, gardening and canning.

Joe will be dearly missed by his wife, Sharon, of Lublin; his children: Donald of Medford, Joseph III of Medford, Sharon (Al) Whetstone of Stetsonville, David of Lublin, Molly Tomczak of Medford; 13 grandchildren; his siblings: Kathleen Geissler of Bloomer, Elaine (Harold) Knox of Holcombe, Josephine (Dale) Seng of Gilman, Donna (Dale) Butkus of Owen, Beverly Tomczak of Bloomer, Elizabeth Tomczak of Thorp, Thomas of Augusta; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert; and one son-in-law: Thomas Geissler.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Rev. Vijay Kumar Madani will officiate, and burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Tomczak, Logan Tomczak, Dale Seng, Al Whetstone, Samson Whetstone, and Kelley Nowobielski.

Edwin Dean Bedell Jr., 50, of Fairchild, died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at his home.

Edwin was born February 14, 1973, in Neillsville to Cheryl Ann Porter and Edwin Dean Bedell Sr. As a child he moved with his family to Fairchild where he attended Fairchild High School and Osseo-Fairchild High School.

Throughout his life Edwin worked at various jobs and for a time worked for his brother-in-law with Lewallen Drywall of Stanley. He enjoyed spending time with friends, working on automobiles and was always fond of the Pontiac Trans Am.

Edwin is survived by his son Tyler Bedell of Tomahawk; daughter Tayah Bedell of Eau Claire; 2 grandchildren, Zeke and Amelia; Mother Cheryl Porter of Neillsville; sister LeAnn (Richard) Lewallen of Stanley; nieces and nephews, Owain, Damian, Austin and Megan; special friend Atavian Orton of Fairchild; and Tyler and Tayah’s mother, Kerry Theiler.

Edwin was preceded in death by his father Edwin Sr.; brother Stanton “Runt” Porter; grandparents, Everett and Eva Bedell and Stanton and Nora Porter.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta. Friends may call 2 hours prior to services starting at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Burial will be in the Lewallen - Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Wilson Township, Eau Claire County.

Bonitz, Joan Marie (10 April 1930 – 30 June 2023)

Joan Marie (Wrege) Bonitz, age 93, passed away on June 30, 2023, at the Wells Nature View Assisted Living in Marshfield.

She was born on April 10, 1930, in Highbridge, to Helmuth and Edith Wrege (Colver). She was the oldest of 11 siblings and spent her childhood in Cozy Valley. She married Ernest Bonitz on August 7, 1949. They made their home, raised 4 children, and farmed in Cozy Valley until 1964 when they moved to Spencer. In Spencer she helped her husband manage a turkey farm and then worked at Weyerhauser in Marshfield, until her retirement. Joan and her husband, Ernest loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Joan loved her flowers, quilting, and making numerous crafts. She was an avid church member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer.


She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest and her son Gary. She is survived by her three children, Lou Ann, Bruce, and Lynn. Joan has 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.


Funeral services for Joan will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 109 Clark Street in Spencer on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor James Groleau officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery (Hwy. 13). Visitation for family and friends will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday.


She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.


The family would like to thank Synergy Home Care, the staff at Wells Nature View and the Compassus Hospice Team for the excellent care they gave mom this past year.

Lovstad, Karl Michael (19 May 1945 – 3 July 2023) With Flag

Karl Michael Lovstad, 78, of Chili, passed away the evening of July 3, 2023, at the House of the Dove in Marshfield.


Karl was born May 19, 1945, the son of Carsten and Doris Lovstad in Viroqua. He graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1963. On September 5, 1970, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Judy in Chili.


After graduation, Karl was drafted to the US Army and served in Vietnam. After his service to our country, he drove truck for W.J. Spry & Son of Chili and then SF Transport of Loyal, where he was awarded one million miles of safe driving. Karl and Judy then operated Harley & Elaine’s bar in Chili until their retirement.


In his spare time, he enjoyed stock car racing, snowmobiling, putzing in his garage on a wooding working project that Judy found in a magazine and knew Karl could make it. Karl enjoyed a well-manicured lawn, and you could find him on his lawnmower frequently in the summer. He also enjoyed lottery tickets, and scratched many of them, although no one ever really knew if he was a big winner or not.


Karl is lovingly survived by his wife, Judy; their children, Dawn (Tad) Krueger, Mike (Jody) Lovstad. Brothers and sisters-in-law, Ken (Karen) Lovstad, Rick (Ruth) Lovstad; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sonja (Burl) Dahl, Chris (Bill) Cliver; and sister-in-law, Judi Kampin. Grandchildren, MaKayla (Bryan) Brennan, Nate Krueger, Carsten Lovstad, Sawyer Lovstad, Jessie Rasmussen, Jenna Rasmussen. Great-granddaughters, Quinn Brennan and Vienna Brennan.


Karl is preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Earl (Nobby) and Audrey Kampin; brothers-in-law, Ronnie Selk, Gerald “Walnuts” Kampin; and sister-in-law, Penny Kampin.

Pietrzak, Frank Anthony (11 June 1941 – 5 July 2023)

Frank A. Pietrzak, 82, of Rothschild, passed away at Pride TLC in Weston, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

Frank Anthony Pietrzak was born on June 11, 1941, in Stanley, to Frank and Frances (Mateski) Pietrzak. He was raised and received his education in Thorp, attending Sterling School from 1st-3rd grade, St. Hedwig's Catholic School from 4th-8th grade, and graduated from Thorp High School in 1959. Frank then taught school for one year in Taylor County in 1961, and then attended UW-Stevens Point and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1966, and his Master of Science in Education in 1977. He taught in the Medford School District from 1962 to 1965, in Wisconsin Rapids from 1967 to 1969, and then at DC Everest in Wausau until retiring in 1998. In retirement, Frank spent his winters in Chandler, AZ.

He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Rothschild, the Wisconsin State Reading Association, Central Wisconsin Reading Association, National Education Association, Wisconsin Education Association, and the Marathon County Retired Educators. Frank had many interests, including Polish Heritage. He belonged to the Polish Heritage Club in Sun Lakes, AZ, and the Polish Awareness Society in Stevens Point, WI. Frank also enjoyed gardening, volunteering, and loved traveling. He visited most of the United States and Canada, and also traveled to Switzerland, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and Germany.

Frank is survived by on sister: Carol (Don) Balslew of Hillside, IL; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: James and Ted; and four sisters: Lillian O'Neil, Carolyn Pietrzak, Hattie Neisius, and Mary Denning.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp, WI. Rev. Stanislaus Michael Antony will officiate, and burial will follow in Old St. Hedwig's Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews. Visitation will be held at the church, on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Wells, Burton R. (16 August 1935 – 5 July 2023)

Burton R. Wells, 87, of Spencer passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Wells Nature View in Marshfield with his wife and daughter by his side.

Burton was born on August 16, 1935, in Greenwood to Adelbert and Elsie (Dux) Wells. He was raised on the family farm near Greenwood. He attended grade school at the Christopherson Country School and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1953. While in high school he learned to play the trumpet and organized his own band. Burton was united in marriage to Jeanne Kobiske on June 2, 1956, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Loyal. The couple recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

After their marriage they lived in Marshfield and Burt was employed by Badger Store Fixtures for 16 years. After that he worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the building and grounds department as a cabinet maker and carpenter for 22 years retiring in 1997. In 1977, they moved to Spencer where they have resided ever since.

He enjoyed his retirement years doing woodworking and building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He was a 35-year member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and was also a charter member of the Mid-State Aeroguidance Club of Marshfield. He attended the EAA convention in Oshkosh many times and was a member of the South Fork Flyers Club in Thorp. Burt also enjoyed watching old westerns, especially “Gunsmoke” as well as cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

Burt is lovingly survived by his wife, Jeanne; son, Larry (Bonnie) Wells of Phoenix, AZ and daughter, Sharon (Scott) Gress of Neillsville He is further survived by nieces and nephews. Burt was predeceased by his parents, Adelbert and Elsie; sisters, Adella Friske and Marguerite Friske and brothers-in-law, Norbert Friske and Norman Friske and a brother, Donald Wells and sister-in-law, Kathryn Wells.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Life Tributes Funeral Home in Spencer. Rev. Barry Saylor will officiate. He will be laid to rest in West Spencer Cemetery in the Town of Sherman. Family and friends are invited to gather for a time of visitation on Thursday at the funeral home from 9 A.M. until time of services.
