Mr. E. P. McCune bought 80 acres of hardwood timber land on the edge of the town
of Hendren in 1908. Mr. McCune, his wife and seven children lived in Waterloo,
Iowa. He was a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad which had a
passenger train from Waterloo to Fort Dodge, Iowa.
In 1911, Mr. McCune moved his wife and children to the land in the town of
Hendren. The larger boys cleared the land and farmed with a pair of oxen (the
boys were Tom and Jerry). Mr. McCune stayed in Waterloo and worked on the
railroad until 1919 when he died of stroke and diabetes at Chicago Illinois
Central Hospital.
