John was born in 1905 in Kopar Jugoslavia near Trieste on the Italian border. He
was the oldest of seven children. He went to school until he was 12 years old.
Their land was all cut up with trenches dug by the army in World War I, so he
decided to come to America in 1922. He worked for a Slovenian newspaper. In 1928
he married Julia Pekol daughter of Joe Pekol Sr. of Willard.
When the big depression came he found himself out of work so they came to
Willard in 1932 and bought a partly developed farm from N.E. Palms, this being
located about 1/2 mile east of Tioga. John and Julia raised five children:
Loretta, Stanley, Robert, John Jr. and Edward.
They farmed there until 1973 when they retired and moved to Greenwood. In 1974
Julia suffered a stroke and has since then had several setbacks. She now needs
special care and resides at the Thorp Care Center.
John's eyesight is not what it could be but otherwise he still enjoys good
health in his neat little home in Greenwood.
