GREENWOOD - A Greenwood dog dealer has been charged by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture with failing to maintain adequate housing for dogs kept at her
commercial breeding facility.
O. Jean Miller, operator of Hillside Kennel, has been given 20 days to respond
to the charges, made by the USDA's Animal and Plant Inspection Service.
Inspection reports cited Miller with neglecting to provide ample lighting for
dogs in the indoor housing facility, failing to provide adequate drainage
systems and housing dogs in pens with dirt floors that could not be properly
cleaned or sanitized and that did not allow dogs to remain dry and clean.
Two letters were sent to the kennel, explaining the deficiencies, according to
Dr. A.R. McLaughlin, APHIS Wisconsin veterinarian-in-charge.
Miller can request an oral hearing on the charges before an administrative law
judge, according to McLaughlin. Failure to respond constitutes an admission of
the charge, he added.
Miller could face up to a $1,000 fine, license suspension and order to stop
future violations.
