Hugo John Quast was born August 20, 1893 in Jefferson, Wisconsin. His parents
were Joseph Quast and Caroline Fisher. He came to Willard in 1922 from Thorp
where he had been a rural mail carrier. He had served a short time in the army
during World War I before that. He purchased the store building from John Zallar
Sr. "Quast & Co." general store was owned by my dad, his father and my Uncle
Linus Prock. Among those employed at the store in the early years were: John
Quast, my dad's 17 year old brother; Genevieve Bayuk; Ignatz Cesnik; Mayme
Bayuk; Mary Lesar; and Frank Fuller, my dad's nephew.
Hugo Quast and Genevieve Ann Bayuk were married September 2, 1924 at Holy Family
Church, Willard. They lived above the store until about 1932. He was confirmed
as postmaster at Willard in April 1932 and assumed charge on May 15, 1932 -
holding that position until December 6, 1942. After that he became rural mail
carrier at Granton then postmaster at Granton in 1948. They moved to the house
next to Campbell's blacksmith shop after leaving the store and lived there until
moving to Granton in 1943 or 1944. Their children were: Delores Genevieve Quast,
born October 10, 1925 in Willard and Mary, born in February 1930. She died
February 20, 1930.
Dad suffered a stroke in 1953 which left him quite disabled physically for seven
years. He lived in Marshfield until his death March 1, 1960 and is buried in
Marshfield.
Genevieve Ann Bayuk was born January 3, 1903 in Pueblo, Colorado. Like so many
of the ladies at Willard, my mother was a good cook and enjoyed doing fancy
work. One of my most treasured possessions today is a 'double wedding ring' bed
cover she made by hand. She died June 11, 1968 and is buried in Marshfield.
