In 1939, after working at the Quast & Company Store for ten years, Mary Lesar
started her own store of groceries, gifts and dry goods. She had a building
moved from the area of the old pickle factory. This building was made with
living quarters upstairs, for Mary and Frank (her brother), it also housed
Frank's mail-hauling equipment downstairs.
In the early days of rural mail delivery there were no snow plows, so he first
had a Model "T" Ford and later a Model "A" Ford, which was converted to "cat
tracks" and ski's with which he was able to deliver mail over snow banks etc.
This store stands on about the same location as the Ingham Store did. Mary also
had a gasoline pump for many years, but has recently discontinued this. She
still operates the store as she has for over 41 years.
Cold Storage Lockers were brought into the depot building at one time after the
train stopped running but when home freezers became popular, this too was
abandoned.
