With lumbering in full swing, the village blacksmith was a necessity. William
Hallock had opened shop here first. William Philpott became a blacksmith by
trade at the age of thirteen. His son, Tom B. learned from him.
Tom Philpott had gone to the west during the Pike's Peak excitement and in 1862
joined the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He had a homestead west of the village
then became a blacksmith and at one time was county sheriff. His children were
Milton, Pearl, George and Guy. The mother was Emily Bresee.
John Philpott was also adventuresome and attended the World's Fair of 1893. When
he returned, he worked on the schoolhouse that was under construction. Later he
managed a mill for a lumber company and in 1901 erected his own mill and did
carpenter work.
