Hope Camp 819 was organized 72 years ago and held its first meeting on January
26, 1898. An oyster supper was put on that evening by the Modern Woodmen Society
at Mulvey's Hall - the room over the former Theisen's Bros. Hardware store but
now the Eastern Star Lodge Building. The Modern Woodmen and their wives were
there to witness the fulfillment of their fond hopes and desires -- the bringing
into existence of a "Royal Neighbor Society" in Loyal.
District Deputy Mrs. Ludington of Neillsville, was present and gave interesting
and helpful talks.
As not enough women could be found at the time to promise in advance, three men
promised to make the required number, and the following 27 were secured to be
known as chartered members: Addie Albright, Mary Alta Thomas, J. Alice Philpott,
Pearl Holmes, Eva Redmond, Emerett Barker, Cornelia Whitney, Annie Mengel,
Florence Darton, Rose Fraiser, Ida Filber, Fanny Smith, Mary Boyer, Eliza
Irvine, Dollie Graves, Olga Darton, Mary E. Welsh, J. Henry Welsh, Mary E.
Church, Lettie Mulvey, Maggie Richmond, Dr. Richmond, Mary Bowman, Marie Wiric,
Annie Van Camp, Jennie Philpott, and A. A. Graves.
Deputy Ludington then proceeded with the election of the following officers for
the new camp:
Oracle - Pearl Holmes; Vice Oracle - Dolly Graves; Past Oracle - Emerett Barker;
Recorder - Annie Van Camp; Receiver - Addie Albright; Chancellor - Cornelia
Whitney; Marshall - Olga Darton; Assistant Marshall - Florence Darton; Inner
