Tabbert, Gary L. (30 August 1937 – 1 January 2010) With Flag
Gary L. Tabbert, 72, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010 at Saint Joseph's Hospital in the
Palliative Care Unit surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was born Aug. 20, 1937, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Louise Tabbert and
Arthur Schmidt. He graduated from Osage High School in 1955. He joined the
United States Navy serving his country from 1955 to 1958 aboard the carrier USS
Hancock (CVA -19). He moved to Des Plaines, Ill., to work for Eastern Airlines
at the O'Hare International Airport. Gary served as a fireman for the Rolling
Meadows Volunteer Fire Department.
On July 13, 1963, he married Lucy Zarins of Withee. Gary moved to Withee and
began working at the Owen Implement as a farm and power equipment mechanic/parts
manager. In February 1988, Gary started employment as the maintenance technician
for the school district of Owen-Withee until his retirement in 2005. Gary was an
avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cabin
with his family. He was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church of Withee.
Gary is lovingly survived by his wife of 46 1/2 years, Lucy Tabbert, of Withee;
his five children David (Julie) Tabbert of Withee, Cindy (Paul) Kopp of Black
River Falls, Karen (Ray) Rathsburg of Gypsum, Colo., Michael (Debbie) Tabbert of
Medford, Daniel (Shannon) Tabbert of Eau Claire. He is the proud grandpa to 16
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
His funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee. Authorized Minister Bonnie Cain will
officiate. Friends may call for a Memorial Gathering from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 5 at the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Owen. Following the
church service, full military rites will be performed.
