Hiram Schofield came here from Boscobel, Wisconsin in 1870 and homesteaded 40
acres located in the Town of Unity (Clark Co.), north and west of Spencer. Upon
retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Schofield bought a small house on Main Street in
Spencer, next door to the former Lutheran Parsonage. At that time their son,
George, and wife took over the farm. When he retired, George sold the farm to
his son, Lee, and he and his wife spent their last years in the home formerly
occupied by his parents. The Lee Schofields later sold the farm to their son,
Ray, and wife, the present owners. The farm acreage has been increased from time
to time, and now totals 280 acres, and they keep a herd of 54 milk cows and 24
heifers.
