Excerpts from letter written by Lt. Cmdr. William Metzgar to express his
gratitude for the kindness and concern and the welcome given him by his fellow
countrymen upon his return from North Vietnam:
“As I sit at my desk this Memorial day watching the rain push flora to its most
radiant green, I consider the supreme sacrifice made by so many on our behalf,
providing us with a way of life never before enjoyed. My contribution is so
small in comparison.”
“As I enjoy the thrill of “living again” each day I am inspired and deeply
touched as I recall your sincerely comforting words. I am truly proud of you for
being concerned, for being a good American and for sustaining you country and
mine through a very trying time.
From the 1,000 plus letters and over 300 bracelets which I’ve received, my
convictions and confidence in the people, America’s greatest resource, were so
pleasantly reinforced. The price of America’s blessings sometimes seems high.
Through a rather unpleasant experience I have learned that that product is worth
any price. Thank you for your contribution, but remember the bill isn’t paid ---
our job isn’t done.”
