Delores Keyes (Mrs. Calvin Cook) , a 17 year old Spencer High School senior, was
chosen as Wisconsin Dairyland Queen, competing with 19 other girls at the
Wisconsin Centennial State Fair on Dairy Day, August 28, 1936, at Milwaukee. She
was crowned with a wreath of Golden Glow by Governor Philip F. LaFollette.
Another girl from this area, Mary Free of Withee, was first runner-up.
Our Dairy Queen represented Wisconsin at the National dairy Exposition, held in
conjunction with the Texas Centennial at Dallas, Texas, October 10-16, 1936. She
wore her Dutch Costume at the official opening and presented Governor Allred of
Texas with the blue ribbon, prize winning, 13-pound cheese from our Wisconsin
State Fair on behalf of her state. In making the presentation, she officially
announced the National Cheese Week of November 8-14. She acted as national
spokesman at this National Dairy Show.
