The Rev. Alfred C. Schewe, pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville from 1949 to 1959, succumbed to a massive cerebral hemorrhage November 21 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Rev. Schewe, who had served as pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Sixth and Vliet Streets, in Milwaukee since leaving Neillsville, was stricken at his home the previous afternoon.

Services were held November 24 from St. John’s in Milwaukee with the Rev. David Tetzloff officiating. Pallbearers were the Revs. Victor Thierfelder, Robert Hoepner, Martin Stern, Robert Zinli, Roy Brassow and Arthur Chutmann. Interment was in Arlington Park Cemetery, Milwaukee.

The Rev. Alfred Carl Schewe was born April 30, 1909, in Milwaukee to Paul and Lydia Wenzel Schewe. He was educated at St. Peter’s Lutheran school and college, and Wisconsin Lutheran seminary in Mequon, graduating with the class of 1934. For a year thereafter, he taught parochial school and assisted at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church of West Mequon. He accepted a call to serve as pastor of Trinity Church and was ordained and installed there on October 28, 1935.

In 1942, Pastor Schewe accepted a call to the dual parish of Emmanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, rural Hartford, and Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Theresa Township, serving there until coming to St. John’s in Neillsville in 1949. During his ministry, he also served the synod as a member of its board of trustees, the investment committee, and the public relations committee.

His marriage to the former Villa Molkentin took place November 8, 1935, in Milwaukee. She survives, as do two children, The Rev. Harold Schewe of Mobridge, S.D., and mrs. Paul (Violet) Kante of Theresa; one brother, the Rev. Erwin C. Schewe of Allenton; and four grandchildren, Greta, Mark and Krista Schewe and David Kante.
