Kirby, Archie (20 March 1895 – 27 November 1976) With Flag
Archie Kirby, 81, former Humbird postmaster, died November 27, 1976 in
Neillsville after a long illness culminated by breaking a hip from which he did
not recover.
He was born in Cherokee, Ia. March 20, 1895, to Edward and Nellie Kirby. His
childhood years were spent in Minnesota. He served two years in the Army during
World War I.
On December 30, 1918, he was married to Maude Todd in little Falls, Mn. During
their early married life, he worked at various trades; a linotype operator, tool
and die maker and was a licensed steam engineer. He was a graduate of Dunwoody
Institute of Minneapolis. He later became a farmer in the Augusta and Willard
areas, then moving to Humbird in 1936 he farmed awhile He became Humbird
Postmaster in 1954 and retired in 1966. Mr. Kirby was active in the Masonic
Lodge, No. 191, in Humbird, Eastern Star, American legion, Senior Citizens and
the Community Club until ill health curbed his activities.
Survivors are his wife, Maude; three daughters, Mrs. Everett (Florence) Senske,
of St. Paul, Mrs. Bud (Margaret) Walker of Fairchild, and Mrs. Richard (Marion)
Maffett of Mansfield, Oh.; three sons, Patrick of Spanaway, Wa., Mike, St.
Cloud, Mn., and Keith Clarksville, Tn.; 22 grandchildren and 28
great-grandchildren.
Services were held November (?) from the United Church of Christ. The Rev. Alvin
Eberts and Rev. Ralph Walker officiated at the service, with burial in Mentor
Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted by the Humbird Lodge no. 191 and
Military rites were conducted by the American legion Post No. 320 of Humbird.
Pallbearers were Alton Stallard, Henry Laffe, Earl Zimmerman, Dan Hausen, Harold
Hansen and Azare Osborne. Honorary pallbearers were his five grandsons, Jim,
Jeff and Joe Senske, and Archie and Bruce Walker.

Ridgeland, Mo.; and Mrs. Frank Hellig, Mr. Henry Spielman of Centuria; Mrs. Ken
Lund of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Solie, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Erdman, Mr and
Mrs. Ninus Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Arndt, Mrs. Alvin Arndt, Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Ratther, Mrs. Herman Senske, Mrs. Emma Dickinsen, all of Augusta; Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Senske, Fargo, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Bud Trader, Marshfield; Mr. and
Mrs. Clarence Larsen, Pittsville; Mrs. Mayme Hallingsted, Whitehall; Mr. and
Mrs. Alex Lubinski, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Lubinski of La Crosse; Mrs. Maynard
