Spencer was fortunate to have citizens who provided good recreation for the
youth in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
A favorite pastime was roller skating and Charles Stoltenow built a rink, the
only one between Stevens Point and Ashland at that time.
The skating rink in the Opera Hall, with Mr. Burnside as manager, advertised
skating Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10c and 15c, Saturday was 15c with their own
skates, and 25c if rink skates were used. Spectators paid 10c.
People also skated in halls over Graves Store, and in the Woodman and Krueger
Virean Halls.
