ABBOTSFORD -- The search resumed this morning and presumed drowned after a canoe
capsized Sunday on the Big Eau Pleine River. Kerry Kline, 23, Glen Ellyn,
Illinois, was riding in a canoe with three other people at approximately 1:30
p.m. when high, rough waters caused the canoe to capsize. The incident occurred
three miles east of Abbotsford, approximately a half mile from Highway 29 where
the canoe trip began, according to Sgt. Robert Sanders of the Marathon County
Sheriff's Department.
Kline's body had not been recovered at 11:30 a.m. today.
Accompanying Kline in the canoe were two Abbotsford residents -- Brian S.
Greene, 21, and Lillian S. Anders, 21 -- and Karen M. Nunn, 20, Carpentersville,
Illinois. When the canoe capsized, they swam to shore. Four life jackets were in
the canoe, but only Anders was wearing one.
Kline was last seen clinging to some brush in the river, Sanders said.
Six Marathon County deputies and many area residents patrolled the shore until
dark Sunday. Because of rough waters deputies could not use a boat to help with
the search. The canoe was discovered after dark by an area resident.
Hazardous river conditions, the result of melting snow and week-end showers,
have hampered the search.
