On a recent weekend, the kitchen at Neillsville United Church of Christ (UCC)
was abuzz with activity, as the mission and outreach committee planned and
coordinated a soup, cheese and bread giveaway for the community.
Three kinds of soup, homemade bread and cheese were prepared for the meal under
the leadership of Kathy Mathis and Barb Petkovsek. UCC members donated quart
jars of soup. Lynn Dairy donated the cheese, UCC members helped make the soup
and bake the loaves of bread.
On Feb. 13, the bread, cheese and soup were packaged and made ready for delivery
or curbside pick-up. That day, UCC volunteers delivered bags of food to
community members unable to pick up the meal. The following day, many community
members picked up the meals for their own use or to give to a friend or neighbor
in need. In all, UCC gave out 100 loaves of baked bread, 100 pounds of cheese
and 75 quarts of soup.
In a press release, UCC council moderator Paul Vine extended appreciation to all
who prepared the food, donated needed items, delivered meals or financially
supported the project, as well as to Lynn Dairy for the cheese donation.
UCC committee members that helped put the event together included Mathis, Carol
Harnisch, Carole Romans, Deb Perkl and Bonnie Weyer.
“Due to the great success of this project, UCC is hosting another giveaway for
Palm Sunday,” Vine wrote.
Curbside pickup will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 28.
“We are asking people to pick up a meal for themselves or pick one up and
deliver a meal to a family that would appreciate it,” Vine added.
