Neillsville Care and Rehab – Sunset Gardens to Close (2021)

Care and Rehab – Neillsville, Sunset Gardens to Close

By Ryan Spoehr

Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) and Care & Rehab announced last week that the two entities had decided to cease operations of Care & Rehab – Neillsville, the skilled nursing home connected to the current Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville (MMC) building, and Sunset Gardens, the assisted living facility on the current MMC campus.

According to a joint statement by the two entities, the closure will be effective mid-May.

“The impact of COVID-19 decreased facility use and other factors made continuing operations of both facilities not feasible with hospital and building services transition to the Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville campus in May,” the statement read. “The health system will continue to provide medical care and dietary, maintenance and environmental services as the process to place residents in other local facilities moves forward.”

Care & Rehab – Neillsville is privately owned and operated.

“Their ownership has made a decision to close their operations in Neillsville,” said Ryan Neville, MMC chief administrative officer. “MCHS has provided leased services to their operations for the past 10-plus years.”

MCHS owns and operates Sunset Gardens.

“Our goal was to transition this ownership to Care and Rehab upon moving. With this announcement, we will also be closing the assisted living,” Neville said. “There are only six residents impacted by this decision.”

There was communication about the decision with residents prior to the public announcement. A letter sent to residents’ families stated that MCHS staff impacted had been informed and provided information and resources for displaced employees during the transition time, including looking for opportunities elsewhere in MCHS. It also stated that MCHS would provide Care & Rehab employees a list of job opportunities within the MCHS and recruiter contact information.
