The Neillsville Common Council recently approved a donation that has had a lot of work put into it from a local Boy Scout.

At the March 9 meeting, the city’s alderpersons approved a donation from the Listeman Foundation in the amount of $1,000, which will be for Scout Kolin Schmitz’s project of redoing the flag pole and walkway area landscaping in the city’s cemetery in the Veterans of Foreign wars area.

There are more donations to come because of Kolin’s efforts to raise funds and complete the project. Kolin has been raising money to do the project and is planning on starting it later this year.

“The plan is we’re going to remove all the shrubs, clean up the area, install benches for 20 people to sit on, [put in] concrete wheelchair-accessible paths and replace grass and replant trees,” Kolin said. “We will build a podium up there as well.”

There will also be a concrete path for people to perform the 21-gun salute.

The project came about with the frequenting of the annual Memorial Day program at the cemetery by Kolin and his family.

“I’ve been in scouts since I was a Cub Scout, and I’ve been going to the Memorial Day program for a long time,” Kolin said.

Kolin will work on the project with his dad, Kevin.
