Sherry, Frank (19 Mar 1886 – 29 Nov 1935)
Redstone and Sheridan County this week mourns the passing of one of its most
high respected citizens, Frank J. Sherry, publisher, good citizen and friend of
man, who died suddenly from a heart attack at his home at Redstone, Montana last
Friday morning. Death of the patriarch journalist and printer, since 1918 editor
of the Redstone Review, came peaceful in the presence of his family.
Mr. Sherry had been ill for about six weeks. The week before his death he felt
much improved. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at his home with his family and Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn Ingell, longtime friends of the Sherry family, he chatted in his
usual jovial manner. He retired early Thursday night. A 6 o’clock Friday
morning, in distress he awakened his family. Death followed within a few
minutes.
Funeral services, attended by hundreds of friends and associates of Mr. Sherry,
were held from the Methodist Church Sunday at Redstone, at 2 o’clock, with Rev.
Rhoddy of Scobey officiating. Rev. Rhoddy paid fitting tribute to the departed
man. Friends and associates stood with bowed heads as the flower laden casket
was taken from the church to the Redstone Cemetery, where burial was made.
Pallbearers, staunch friends all, were Guy Wigmore, Glenn Ingell, Judd Matkin,
Harry Loucks, Dale Fisher and Balder Jensen.
Frank Sherry was born at Neenah, Wis., March 19, 1886. His boyhood days were
spent there. When a lad, 14 years old, he first felt the touch of type and
smelled the scent of printer’s ink, starting as an apprentice at Neenah, Wis.
Newspaper. The boy soon became a skilled printer. He followed the printing
profession, which destiny molded him for his like’s work.
Printers and newspapermen can readily picture Mr. Sherry’s early day in the
printing profession. The thrill of being put at a “case” with fantastic type,
was all like a dream, to awe you. Long hours, countless times by dim
lamplight….working without pay as he undoubtedly did, but thrilled at the
opportunity of being taught to master a noble profession.
He spent years, as other have done in mastering the craft. In 1906 he
established a newspaper at Stanley, Wisconsin. He later established papers at
Balaton, Minnesota and Owen, Wisconsin.
Frank Sherry was married to Amanda Johnson February 27, 1906. He was then a
promising young newspaperman.
