On January 4, 1976, Frank Stone, a resident of Owen since 1956, will celebrate
his 95th birthday.
Mr. Stone came from Finland in 1913 and settled in Cloquet, Minnesota, where he
worked in saw mills and forests. Cloquet was destroyed by forest fires, but was
rebuilt in the same location.
Mr. Stone moved to Bessemer, Michigan, where he married Fanny Lassila in 1917.
They operated a boarding house for iron miners.
They moved in 1921 to the farm located 3 ½ miles north of 29 on the Town Line of
Withee and Hixon. After 15 years they retired to an apartment next to the home
of their only daughter, Ella (Mrs. Joe Zielinski), who teaches in the Junior
High of O-W Schools.
Among the guests at their housewarming party in 1921 were many Finnish families
of the Owen-Withee area that will be remembered by present day residents,
including: Charles Hendrickson, Frank Juntunen, Arthur Laine, Matt Maki, Walter
Hill, John Nieminen, Otto Santala, Victor Venet, Mat Kujula, Chas. Kangas, Anton
Lindquist, Henry Kuoppala, Andrew Laine, Emil Haays, John Kapytla and Oscar
Santala.
Mr. Zielinski is employed at the Clark County Home in Owen.
The Stones have one grandson, Ronnie, who resides in Sheboygan with his wife
Sara and two daughters.
The Stones enjoy visiting friends who call, and watch TV. Both are in fairly
good health except for failing eyesight.
Happy Birthday and New Year!
