Chamber Banquet (Honors – 19 October 1976)

The annual meeting of the Neillsville area Chamber of Commerce will be held this coming Tuesday, October 19, according to chamber officials. The meeting known as the “Howdy-Neighbor Dinner Dance,” will feature presentations of activities of the chamber for the past year, the honoring of a citizen and agti-citizen of the year, dinner and dance.

Selected as citizen of the year this year by the chamber board of directors is Dr. Kenneth F. Manz, a semi-retired practicing physician at the Neillsville Memorial Hospital for a number of decades. The presentation will be made by John Bergemann, administrator of the hospital.

The selection of the agribusiness citizen was still not completed at Press time.

The banquet and dance will be held at the Bali Hai Supper Club. Tickets for the event can be purchased from the Neillsville Bank or First National Bank, Sniteman Pharmacy or from the Clark County Agency. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Time of the banquet has been set at 7:30 p.m., with cocktails being served one hour prior.

Chamber Banquet (Honors – 19 October 1976)

Two Neillsville area citizens were to be honored at the annual meeting of the Neillsville area Chamber of Commerce, Tuesday evening.

The honorees, Dr. Kenneth F. Manz and Art Ackerman, were selected by the chamber for their efforts in promoting the Neillsville aera and professional and volunteer accomplishments.

Dr. Manz, who is now a semi-retired physician, has long been associated with the Neillsville Memorial Hospital and Clinic.

Ackerman, who serves on the Clark County Board of Supervisors, has long been active in conservation practices in the county and region. He has won state awards for his efforts.

The chamber meeting, in banquet form, each year honors two citizens. This year the chamber is chaired by Robert Rennock, Neillsville pharmacist.

( Ackerman and Dr. Manz Honored - 1976)

Two Neillsville Citizens were honored at the annual meeting of the Neillsville area Chamber of Commerce last week, both of them semi-retired men.

Honored were Dr. Kenneth F. Manz as citizen of the year and Arthur Ackerman, Agri-citizen of the year.

The meeting brings together representatives from various Neillsville area businesses. This year, besides the awards, the group of 150 heard discussion of the possibility of the Chamber of Commerce utilizing a part-time or full-time staff member for community promotion and development.

Present the award to Dr. Manz was John Bergemann, Neillsville Memorial Hospital administrator, who gave a background on the physician as well as a few personal notes.

Manz was born in 1911 in Chippewa Falls, attended schools there and entered the then Eau Claire Normal, now known as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and finally graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison medical school in 1935.

After interning and serving his residency in Chicago, he began practicing medicine in Burlington. He later moved to Black River Falls and in 1946 organized the present Neillsville medical complex with Dr. M.V. Overman. The hospital now employs 250 people and has a million dollar payroll.

Besides serving as medical director of the Neillsville Nursing Home and sitting on the hospital’s board of directors, Dr. Manz is involved in the promotion of the Red Cross blood bank. He is also an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.

Also presenting an award was Dr. Ozturk, a fellow staff physician at the clinic, who gave Dr. Manz a plaque and watch.

Joining Dr. Manz in receiving community laurels was Ackerman, who has been active in local government and conservation issues for a number of years.

Ackerman was married in 1935 to Celia Rock. The had one daughter, Dorothy, now Mrs. Marvin E. Anderegg.

Prior to 1935, Ackerman worked at the Farmers’ Union, then farmed for 35 years. He is still residing on his Town of Pine Valley farm, begun by his grandfather.

Ackerman’s government service began in 1946 when he was elected an officer for the Town of Pine Valley and has remained an officer since then. He was elected to the Clark County Board of Supervisors in 1957 and has served there continually.

While on the board of supervisors, Ackerman was and is active on the agricultural committee, the county’s and state’s water conservation district program. Promoted the Poplar River watershed, serves on the finance committee and aided in the organization of a municipal ambulance and rural fire association. He has won a state award for his work in watershed projects and promotions.
