Schumacher, Rev. Charles P.
In observance of the 35th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of the
Rev. Charles P. Schumacher, a potluck dinner will follow the Sunday Mass at
Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He is the pastor of both Bakerville church and
St. Stephen's of Chili.
Schumacher was born July 3, 1923 in Colfax and completed his eigth-grade
education st St. Joseph's parochial School, Menomonie. He attended preparatory
seminary at St. Lawrence in Mount Calvary for high school courses and the first
two years of college. His last two years (philosophy) were at St. John's
University, Collegeville, Minnesota, and his theology studies were taken at St.
Mary's seminary in Baltimore.
On April 24, 1948 he was ordained at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral in La
Crosse. On May 7, 1948 he was assigned to be assistant at St. Anthony's Catholic
Church, Athens. His next assignments were February 16, 1950 as assistant at St.
Mary's, Wausau; July 3, 1951 assistant to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Arcadia;
May 29, 1956 assistant to Sacred Heart, Eau Claire; June 4, 1958 assistant at
St. Anthony's Athens; November 24, 1959 pastor of St. John's Wuerzburg;
September 1971 left for 10 months of active duty with the military st Fort
Lewis, Washington, during the Berlin Crisis; September 29, 1971 pastor to St.
Mark's, Rothschild; July 1, 1981 pastor of St. Stephen's Chili; and April 21,
1982 also pastor at Corpus Christi.
Schumacher was a chaplain with the U.S. Army national Guards from 1953 until
August 1976, when he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Besides
federal active duty at Fort Lewis, he also saw active duty during the Milwaukee
riots.
