Plummer, Donald George (21 September 1936 – 28 March 2021)
Donald George Plummer, age 84, of Hudson, formerly of Stanley, peacefully went
to be with the Lord on March 28, 2021.
He was born September 21, 1936, in Owen, to George and Margaret (Gruber)
Plummer. Don spent his first 14 years at the Clark County Home where his father
managed the farming operations. It was there that young Don gained his deep
compassion for those with different abilities and made every effort throughout
life to treat all equally.
At age 8, Don, tragically lost his father. After a few tough years, the family
moved to Stanley where he completed high school in 1954. Following graduation,
he completed one year at the DeVry Technical School learning TV and radio
repair. With his tech certificate in hand, he moved to Minneapolis to work for
Sperry-Rand in the emerging computer industry. While working in the Twin Cities,
Don met Twila Salvhus, who became the love of his life. They were married on
September 7, 1957 and moved back to Stanley.
After a few years in the TV repair field, Don’s entrepreneurial instincts led
him to purchase the Coast to Coast Hardware business in Stanley, which he
successfully grew into two thriving locations with the addition of the store in
Thorp. Don was known throughout the community, serving on many church and civic
committees including the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Commercial Club, City
Council, Victory Memorial Hospital Planning Board and numerous church
committees. He was always willing to donate to social causes for the benefit of
the community. After selling the hardware stores in 1984 and a brief retirement,
Don worked in sales at Courtesy Ford in Thorp because he loved interacting with
people.
Don finally retired in 1991, giving him more time to enjoy his passion for
fishing, woodcarving and painting. Don spent his later years making many family
memories at their vacation homes on Lake Holcombe and in Florida. He loved
spending time with his children and grandchildren. He truly was a role model,
offering encouragement and compassion when it was most needed.
Don will be greatly missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Twila; his three
children, Dave (Jeanette) Plummer of Hudson, Bruce (Judy) Plummer of White Bear
Lake, Minnesota, and Michele (Jody) Halterman of Stanley, his six grandchildren
Christopher (Amanda) Plummer, Catelyn (Michael) Olson, Josh Plummer, Megan
Plummer, McKenzie Halterman, and Madison Halterman; and two great grandchildren,
Emmalyn and Mikey; his sister, Harriett Laube; and his four nephews and their
families.
Preceding Don in death are his father, George Abraham Plummer, his mother,
Margaret Grace (Gruber) Plummer; his infant sister, Lois Jane Plummer; and
brother-in-law, Dick Laube.
A private funeral Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Stanley.
Interment will be at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Stanley.
Cards and memorial donations can be mailed to Michele Halterman, 700 Jefferson
St., Stanley, Wisconsin, 54768. The family will donate the memorials in memory
of Don to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
