Gilbertson, Chief Boatswain’s Mate William G. (Service Notes - 1976)
Chief Boatswain’s Mate William G. Gilbertson, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.T.
Gilbertson of Rt. 1 Merrillan, recently returned from an extended deployment
with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. He is a crew-member aboard the
guided missile cruiser-USS Gridley, 533 feet long, homeported at San Diego. The
Gridley and other ships participated in a serries of training maneuvers designed
to test the ships’ capabilities and enhance their operational readiness.
His ship participated in “Operation Tiger”, which permitted male relatives to
transit aboard the Gridley, between Hawaii and San Diego to learn firsthand as
to what shipboard life is like. Gilbertson has the opportunity to visit Pusan,
Korea; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Hong Kong; and Subic Bay, Republic of Philippines. He
joined the Navy in October 1962.
