Stores TO Open (Friday Evenings - 1976)
The confusion for Neillsville area shoppers appears to be ended. In the last
half of 1976, consumers traveled to the community for an evening of browsing and
buying and were never sure what stores were open what night.
At the beginning of 1976, Neillsville businessmen met and agreed unanimously
that their traditional Friday evening store hours were not filling their needs
for sales volumes. They voted and decided to switch the night of shopping from
Friday to Monday.
Now the group, the Neillsville area chamber of commerce retail committee, has
decided to return to the Friday evening shopping time schedule. Stores will no
longer be open on Monday evenings.
The 1976 year was a trial time for the businessmen. According to a businessman,
Monday evenings were “every bit as good” as the previous Friday evening
openings. Some of the businessmen went further and stated that the Monday hours
were better for their businesses. But the Monday hours created some problems for
certain businesses and in order to create unity for shoppers, the merchants
agreed to go back to Friday.
The first Friday evening for the community will be on January 7.
