Thomas E. DeBerg, Neillsville, earned a Juris Doctor Degree from Stetson
University’s College of Law, May 11, during the school’s graduation exercises
held at the St. Petersburg Law School.
Dr. Pope A. Duncan, Stetson president, conferred the degrees to 114 students.
The speaker for the ceremony was William Reece Smith, Jr., chairman of the law
firm of Carlton, Fields, Ward, Emmanuel, Smith and Cutler, of Tampa.

UW-Stevens Point-Gray, Dean (Achievement Award - 1985)
Dean Gray, Rt. 1 Chili, has been honored as one of the top theatre arts students
for 1984-85 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He was recognized at a
recent awards banquet sponsored by the Players, student theatre arts
organization.
Gary received an Achievement Award for directing and was cited for the directing
of his senior recital, “Who’ll Save the Plowboy?”
A 1980 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School, he is a senior theatre arts
major at UW-SP.

Lyn C. Opelt, daughter of Jerry and Fay Opelt, Rt. 2 Neillsville, received a
Doctor of Law degree at Commencement ceremonies at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, May 18. Lyn is a 1967 graduate of Neillsville, and received her BA from
Madison in 1980.

Robinson, Dawn (BB Administration - 1985)
Dawn Robinson of Neillsville was among the approximately 1,160 candidates for
graduation at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on May 11.
Dawn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson, 1007 E. Second Street earned the
degree of Bachelor of Business Administration magna cum laude in management
computer systems and finance. She will be employed as a computer programmer for
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Milwaukee.

Six Viterbo college students were honored with awards at the Annual Army Cadet
Awards Day ceremony held last week on the UW-La Crosse Campus. Among the award
recipients was Sheila Wetzel, daughter of Ray and Sharon Wetzel, Neillsville, a
nursing major, who received the National Sojourners Award.

UW-Eau Claire commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 18, in the
University Arena. Acting Chancellor Larry Schnack will confer the degrees and
preside over the ceremony. Vice chancellor Norman J. Doorenbos will present the
candidates for degrees.
Area students who are candidates for bachelor's degree and their field of study

Clark Co.-UW-Eau Claire (Honor Banquet - 1985)
Alpha Lambda Delta, the national freshman women’s honorary society, recently
presented academic achievement awards during the UW-Eau Claire Honor Banquet.
Certificates were awarded to seniors who, at the end of seven semesters, have
maintained the cumulative grade-point average required for Alpha Lambda Delta
membership, 15 registered credits leading to a bachelor's degree and at least a
3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Area students receiving this honor were: Cheryl Clemens,
biology student from Neillsville, Nancy Kallstrom, elementary education student
from Abbotsford, and Telly Mamayek, journalism student from Thorp.
Also presenting awards at this year’s Honors Banquet was the Society of
Participating Honor Students, (SophS). The purpose of SophS is to acknowledge
and encourage outstanding achievement and significant-service to UW-Eau Claire.
To receive the Outstanding Senior Award, students must maintain a grade-point
average of at least 3.5 and be nominated by their major department head.
Selection is based on active participation and offices held in
department-related and other organizations, involvement in research or other
activities relating to their program of study, and leadership roles. Susan
Richmond, Greenwood, a nursing student, and Scott Wegner, Neillsville,
accounting student, were recipients of the Outstanding Senior Award.

Clark Co.-UW-Marshfield Center-Wood Co. ( Dean’s List - 1985)
Laura Johnsrud, Marshfield, was named Outstanding Student of the year and
received the William Pors Award during the annual Awards Convocation held May 8
at the University of Wisconsin Center, Marshfield-Wood County.
Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees were awarded to 31 students,
with 28 students earning placement on the Dean’s List, and honors for
achievements in business, athletics, journalism, music and drama.
Area Associate in Science degree recipients were Lauar Debevec and Barbara
Krultz-Koschak, Willard; Robert Maves and Robert Todd, Chili, Tony Yaron,
Curtiss. The degrees were presented by Herbert Scidmore, director of Student
Services.
Students who earned placement on the Dean’s List received certificates of
achievement from Dean Koopman. Placement is based on earning at least a 3.5
grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Part-time students who made the Dean’s List
included Gwendolyn Friemoth and Virginia Thoma, Neillsville; and Carol Hubing,
Granton.

O’Neill Jaycees Sponsor Little Miss Pageant (1985)
The 3rd annual Little Miss Neillsville Pageant, sponsored by the O’Neill
Jaycees, is scheduled for May 31, 7:30 p.m., at the Middle School Multi Media
Room. All girls aged 7 to 9, as of May 31, ae eligible to enter. Applications
are available at Neillsville Bank or First National Bank, and the entry fee is
