Neillsville-CART Hosts Kids’ Summer Art Camp (14/15 August - 2024)

Clark Cultural Art Center (CART) hosted Kids’ Summer Art Camp for kids ages seven to 12 August 14 -15. After the kids finished their art projects, an art and piano show were held at CART August 15 at 6:30 p.m.

CART is located in the former United Methodist Church. The church was built in the late 1800s. The stained-glass windows and paintings decorate the sanctuary, a perfect place for an art and piano show.

Debby DeWitt, CART board member, spent time working the kids. “We were fortunate to have ten kids this year,” she said. “They took a sketching class. They decorated clay pots; they drew the design and decorated them. Some are simple; others are detailed.”

DeWitt has been involved with CART for five years. “I like working with children. They’re our future. If they can be encouraged with their creativity and individual expression and feel good about themselves, it’s wonderful,” she said. “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with these young people.”

According to DeWitt, the kids have a wide range of abilities. They made their own lunches of garlic toast pizza, frozen berry yogurt, walking tacos, and fruit. “The Kids’ Summer Art Class was from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for two days. The cost was $20 per child. A grant from Xcel Energy funded part of the program,” said DeWitt. “CART gives opportunities for kids to come and experience the arts: sketching, painting, culinary arts, barn quilts and clay pots.”

Along with the young artists showcasing their art projects, two talented ladies from Neillsville, Julianna Ruegsegger and Abigail “Abby” Mathis entertained guests by playing the baby grand piano, donated by Rosie and Jim Repinski. “The piano needs to be played,” said Rosie Repinski.

Barb Petkovsek, CART volunteer, introduced the pianists. “Ruegsegger performed her first piano concert at age 12. She charged a nickel for tickets,” said Petkovsek. “Music allows me to express emotions when words fail,” Ruegsegger said. “Abby Mathis plays guitar, piano and sings,” said Petkovsek. Mathis finds joy in all three.

“CART is nonprofit,” said Petkovsek. “We received a grant from Xcel Energy. They play a large role in our programs.”
