Gallagher, Navy Seaman Scottie A. (Service Notes - 1977)

Navy Seaman Scottie a. Gallagher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel N. Gallagher, Neillsville, is currently on an extended deployment in the Mediterranean sea.

He is serving as a crewmember aboard the dock landing ship USS Pensacola, homeported in Little Creek, Va. His ship is operating as a unit of the U.S. Sixth fleet.

Thus far during the cruise, he and his fellow crewmembers participated in the major NATO exercise “Dawn Patrol ’77.” The two-week exercise was designed to test the ability of NATO forces to provide rapid reinforcement of southern Europe, and included units from the U.S., the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom. Additionally, he and his fellow shipmates are scheduled to visit several Mediterranean ports during the remainder of the deployment.

The Pensacola is 553 feet long, has a crew of 397 men, and can accommodate more than 350 combat troops. She is designed to carry preloaded landing craft aboard and offload them during amphibious operations.

A 1976 graduate of Neillsville High School, he joined the Navy in May 1976.
