Dux, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Gloden – 1 June 1977)
On June 1, 1927, Della McKimm and Robert Dux drove from the country through the
shale pit in order to be married at the Methodist parsonage in Neillsville. The
fact that a new bridge was being constructed on Highway 10 across Black River
necessitated the roundabout route.
After their marriage, the Duxes lived in Neillsville for a number of years, then
moved to Wisconsin Rapids and eventually to Lancaster, Ca., they returned to
Neillsville recently to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary among relatives
and old friends.
And sure enough, history repeated itself, with highway 10 detoured once again
while a new bridge is being built. Just for old time’s sake, since they were
staying with friends in the city, the couple took a reminiscent drive through
the shale pit.
Approximately 175 friends and relatives gathered Sunday, June 26, in the
fellowship hall of the United Methodist Church to wish the Duxes well on their
golden anniversary. The guests came from Neillsville, Loyal, Wisconsin Rapids,
Milwaukee and West Allis, St. Paul, Mn ., and Rockford and Hampshire, Il.
On hand to host the event were the couple’s daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and
Richard Turner and their three sons, Bob, Tim and Craig of Palmdale, Ca. Helping
to make everything just a bit more special was a letter of Congratulations from
President and Mrs. Carter at the White House in Washington, D.C.
Robert and Della exchanged their June marriage vows before the Rev. S.J.
Lambright. Their attendants were Nelda Hagedorn Hoffman, present for the
anniversary observance, and Ernest McKimm, now deceased.
Both the Duxes were born and educated in Clark County. They lived in Neillsville
until 1940, while he worked at Warlum Electric and Plumbing and at the Welch
Chevrolet garage, and then moved to Wisconsin Rapids where he was manager of
Northern Auto Supply. In 1943 the family moved to California. Mr. Dux was
employed by Montes Auto Parts store from that time until his retirement in 1971
as manager of the Lancaster store.
