Urban, Joseph Sr. (29 May 1898 – 15 June 1977)

A former Neillsville businessman, Joseph Urban, Sr., died June 15, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, at the age of 79. Funeral services were held June 17, from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, in Sturgeon Bay, of which he was a member, with burial following in Bayside Cemetery.

Mr. Urban was born May 29, 1898, in Chicago, Il., to Joseph and Mary Urban. He moved to Sturgeon Bay in the early 20’s and started the Sturgeon Bay Laundry. His marriage to the former Lena Wagner took place January 10, 1923, in Sturgeon Bay. In 1928, he returned to Chicago and operated a Checker Cab business until 1929 when he returned to Door County and purchased the Lake View Tavern in Jacksonport which he operated until 1935 when it was destroyed by fire.

He then moved to Kewaunee where he operated the Grove until the Ivanhoe was built in Jacksonport. In 1947, Mr. Urban moved to Neillsville where he and his sons operated an auto agency and garage. He returned to Sturgeon Bay in 1951 after purchasing the Chrysler-Plymouth agency which he operated until 1956 when he sold the business.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Joe, Jr., and Charles (Bob) Urban, both of Neillsville; and one sister, Mrs. Harry Rulo of Sturgeon Bay; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
