Mattila, Selma (1 Jan 1890 – 26 Jun 1976)
Services for Mrs. Selma Mattila, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany
Lutheran Church in Owen. Mrs. Mattila died at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Marshfield
Convalescent Center, Marshfield.
Officiating was the Rev. Lloyd Yaggie, pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church in
Withee. Burial followed in the Withee Riverside Cemetery.
The former Selma Melander was born in Finland on January 1, 1890. She was
married in Finland on November 20, 1907 to Victor Mattila, and the couple came
to America in 1908 and settled at Stambaugh, Michigan. They then moved to a farm
northeast of Owen in March 1915, and lived there until retirement.
Her husband died July 23, 1964. They had celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary in 1957.
She later resided in Owen for nine years prior to entering the nursing home
about a year ago.
Survivors include a son, Toivo, California; six daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Mair,
Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Lily Wilson, Marshfield, Mrs. Anthony (Vieno) McGuire,
Burbank, California, Mrs. Irja Blodgett and Mrs. P. F. (Ina) Garces, both of
Milwaukee, and Mrs. Clarence (Elsie) Schultz, Curtiss; 18 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.
