Hein, Mr. and Mrs. William (70th - 1977)
Former residents of Humbird, William and Kittie Hein, celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary on October 2. The Heins now live in Scott City, Ks., in
their mobile home, and their daughter, Beth Jeffrey, gives them a hand in
day-to-day living. Both are in good health despite the challenge of old
age-William 94 and Kittie is 91.
Seventy years ago, in 1907, William Hein and Kittie Phillips quietly left
Humbird in a borrowed horse and buggy rig for a secret early morning wedding at
the Methodist parsonage at Merrillan, The Reverend Sills officiating. A Green
Bay and Western train trip to La Crosse began a short honeymoon. William was
then employed as a carpenter and working on the Zerbel farm in Jackson County.
Except for a few years between the burning of the old Hein house, located near
the Humbird Roller Mill on Lake Emerson, and the rebuilding of the home of 1927,
the Heins lived on the site established as a home by Wilhelm Schmidt, William’s
grandfather, in 1870.
In 1911 William became the RFD mail carrier on Rt. 1. He retired from this job
in 1943 after 32 years of service.
An anniversary dinner at Scott City was to be attended by their daughter, Beth,
and her husband, Roy Jeffrey, and their son, Col. Neil Hein, (U.S. Army-Ret.)
and his wife, Marion, of Chipita Park, Colorado.
