Friends in Northern New York of Judge James O’Neill of Neillsville, Wisconsin,
learned of his death yesterday in Wisconsin. For many years it had been his
custom to come east each summer and spend the hot weather months on the St.
Lawrence River some miles east of Ogdensburg, where he had a camp.
He was born in the township of Lisbon (New York) in the fall of 1847, on the
farm settled by his grandfather. He taught school in Lisbon at the age of 15. He
entered St. Lawrence University in 1865. At the end of three years he earned a
scholarship to Cornell University, which he entered as a sophomore. In 1970 he
was principal of the Ogdensburg High School. In 1873 he was graduated from the
Albany Law School.
James O’Neill, an uncle and found of Neillsville, prevailed on him to go west in
1874 and begin his practice. He was a Republican. He was elected to the
Wisconsin state legislature in 1885, and was elected Circuit Judge in 1898. His
active career on the bench terminated January 1, 1922. He was married in 1878.
Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. F. D. Galway of
Neillsville; a sister, Mrs. George Sparrowhawk of Ogdensburg; a brother, William
O’Neill of Lisbon.
