Loyal-First Snow Fest (Debbie Voigt/Queen - 1978)
Wood sawing events highlighted the first day of the Loyal Winter Carnival. Dave
Volovsek, Greenwood, cut his way into earning the giant trophy to total points
in the several events.
Volovsek and Bill Ehlers, Greenwood, teamed up to take first in the two-man
crosscut sawing with the Zvolena brothers, Jess and John, Loyal, taking second.
In the one-man crosscut event, Volovsek and Ehlers took first and second.
Frank Jacobitz, Spencer, took first in the 0 to 44 cc class, Dave Grube, Loyal,
taking second. In the 42 – 55 cc class, Dave Volovsek was first and Tom Loos,
Loyal, second. Ken Volovsek, Greenwood, was first in the 56 to 85 cc class and
Tom Weyer, Greenwood, was second. Bill Ehlers was first in the 66 to 85 cc class
and William Elmhorst, Granton, second. In the 86 cc over, Dave Volovsek was
first and Robert Elmhorst, Granton, second. Tom Weyer, Greenwood, took first in
the axe chopping and John Weyer, Loyal, second.
Four teams competed in the rope pulling with the Weyers winning over the Rueths.
Mary Ellen Volovsek, Greenwood, took the first trophy for Women’s nail driving
with Barb Langan, Willard, taking second. Melissa Olson and Ricky Rueth won the
trophies in the penny scramble.
Many enjoyed the sleigh rides with Alfred Meyer providing the team work.
The retiring queen, Pam Rowley, crowned Debbie Voigt as the new Winter Carnival
Queen during the dance, Saturday evening, at the Loyal Legion Hall. Debbie was
selected by her schoolmates at the Loyal High School where she is a sophomore.
Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Voigt, Rt. 2 Spencer.
Those in her court of honor were Ann Marie Olson, a freshman and daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Noel Olson; Donna Verhulst, from the junior class and daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Lyle Verhulst; and Cindy Zvolena, from the senior class and daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Zvolena; all of rural Loyal.
The events Sunday included many classes of snowmobile racing with Queen Debbie
presenting the trophies in the late afternoon.
