GREENWOOD, July 28 - The farm home of John D. Wuethrich, Jr., two and one-half
miles southeast of here was burned to the ground this morning with a loss of
$6,500. The building was only partially insured.
The origin of the blaze, which was discovered at 9:30 a.m. is uncertain. A brush
fire was burning on the Wuethrich farm at the time but is believed to have been
too far from the house to have caused the fire. A defective chimney is advanced
as another theory on the cause of the conflagration.
An alarm was turned in to Greenwood, and a number of Greenwood People hurried to
the scene to join farmers who were fighting the blaze, but the home could not be
saved. A woodshed and a milk house also burned.
The furniture was carried from the house and little of it was damaged. It was
insured. Mrs. Wuethrich and a hired man and a hired girl were alone on the farm
at the time, Mr. Wuethrich being absent on a milk route.
