Mizerka, Tillie M. (12 August 1929 – 7 June 2021)
Tillie M. Mizerka, 91, of Thorp, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021, at
Ascension Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley.
Tillie Marie Gunia was born on August 12, 1929, in rural Thorp, the daughter of
Thomas F. and Stephania (Wrzos) Gunia. She was raised on the family farm and
received her education at the Pozen School. Tillie was united in marriage to
John P. Mizerka on June 9, 1951, at St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Thorp. They
moved often due to her husband's employment; living in Chicago, San Francisco,
Seattle and finally settling in Minneapolis Tillie's love of a simple life
brought her back to Thorp in November 2016. She valued her memories of growing
up in Thorp and shared those memories with her children and grandchildren.
Tillie was a fiercely independent woman, who always saw the best in others, and
taught her children to always do their best. She was a member of St. Bernard-St.
Hedwig's Catholic Church and was a woman of strong faith.
Tillie had many interests, but especially enjoyed going to rummage sales,
cooking, sewing, gardening, listening to Willie Nelson, and taking care of her
cats.
Her passing is a profound loss for her children: Robert J. Mizerka of Eau
Claire, Elizabeth J. (Edward) Nowobielski of Thorp, Mary E. (Bernard) Silkowski
of Centerburg, OH; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Jean
McNamara of Homer Glen, IL, Vicki Harbison of Las Vegas, NV; one brother: Leon
(Joanne) Gunia of New Hope, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John "Jack" Mizerka on
November 15, 1984, and one daughter, Carol A. Van der Borg, on April 14, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Friday, June 11, 2021, at St.
Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Thorp. Rev. Baskaran Sandhiyagu will
officiate, and burial will follow in New St. Hedwig's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church, on Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of
service.
