Zimmerman, Joseph A. (5 May 1889 – 26 January 1979)

A retired Neillsville businessman, who managed one of the larges sores in the community many years ago, passed away in the Neillsville Memorial Home, Friday, January 26. The deceased is Joseph A. Zimmerman, 89, formerly resided at 32 Grand Ave., Neillsville.

Mr. Zimmerman was born on May 5, 1889, in Muscoda o George F. Zimmerman and wife. After receiving his early education in that northern Grant County, he moved at the age of nine with his parents to Neillsville where he finished his schooling. He then worked for his father in Zimmerman’s Store, located where the D&M Department Store is now. On November 3, 1914, he married Fay Marsh in Neillsville ceremonies.

When the Farmer’s Store Company purchased the Zimmerman store, Joseph remained to manage the operation for a number of years. Later, he and his brother, George, owned and operated Zimmerman Brother’s Men’s Clothing Store in the city for many years. After retiring in 1957, Zimmerman resided in his home until his stay in the Memorial Home

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 28, from the Gesche Funeral Home with burial in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Masonic services were held with Wayne Grap in charge. Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the Neillsville Masonic Lodge No. 163 F&AM and the Shrine Temple.

Survivors include one child, Mrs. C.H. (Betty) Hageman, Belleville; one brother, Harry, Medilia, Minn.; one grandchild, and one great-grandchild. Preceding him in death was his wife, who passed away in 1972, and one brother, George.
