Grosbier, (Service Notes - 1978)

Navy Gunner’s Mate Third Class Joseph M. Grosbier, whose wife, Linda, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Meinhardt, Rt. 2 Greenwood, is participating in the major allied exercise “Rumpac ‘78”. He is serving as a crewmember aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Leahy, homeported in San Diego.

Conducted in the Mid-Pacific Ocean area adjacent to Hawaii, “Rumpac ‘78” involved approximately 22,000 men, 42 ships and 225 aircraft from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This marks the sixth annual, joint maneuver conducted by naval forces from “rim of the Pacific” nations.

“Rumpac ‘78” tests and evaluates the combat readiness of participating units. Areas covered include antisubmarine warfare, air defense and carrier operation, at-sea rearming and replenishment, plus Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Hawaii.

Grosbier joined the Navy in December 1974.
